Hey everyone! Hope your Friday night was great. I’m feeling a little under the weather, so please don’t type or click too loudly. But I will sacrifice for you, as it’s time once again for Jobs That Might Seem Cool But Actually Kinda Suck!
The job: Haute couture fashion designer
You might like this job if: You like fashion. And being fashionable. And stretching the definition of the term “fashion.”
The good: You get to design one-of-a-kind, fancy-schmancy clothes that will be paraded up and down the world’s walkways, admired and coveted by many. Only the finest models will be draped in your clothes, and you’ll be praised as an “artistic genius” getting boatloads of money. You probably own your own design house too, which means that you’ll be getting even more money.
The bad: Your profession is basically making disposable clothes to follow the zeitgeist. Except, instead of doing it cheaply, you spend absurd amounts of money, becoming a representation of modern excesses. The designs have to become more and more unique, leading to great impracticalities. And no one will really wear your designs beyond the runway. Basically, you’re making clothing that no one can wear or afford to appease the masses. And along the way, you’ll probably get really snooty.
Additionally, you have to fight to retain your image as a cutting-edge designer. If you lose this reputation, your career is over. Sleepless nights dreaming of how to create an abstract avocado-themed dress will haunt you, and the incalculable number of pin-pricks will make your hands hurt constantly. You will wind up collecting thimbles, alone save for your espresso machine and mannequins, their blank, lifeless eyes judging you every day for the rest of your life…
Summary: If you like fashion, but hate practicality, this might be the job for you. But in times of economic distress, you’ll look like a pretentious jackass. And in times of economic expansion, you’ll look like a pretentious jackass.
