What’s this?  Is it…?  Yes, I think it is!  It’s…

A POST ABOUT JOB STUFF!

What?!  That’s crazy talk!

But seriously, I wanted to share with you something that I probably stole from some career counselor or other, called “the Rule of One.”

It has nothing to do with ancient prophecies or Illuminati-esque organizations.  Sorry, Tom Hanks.

Anyway, the rule is this: increase or decrease different areas of your life by one.  Get up one hour earlier than usual.  Fill out one more job application before you take a lunch break.  Brainstorm one more item to put in your portfolio.  Cut out one frivolous expense from your shopping trip (sorry, designer hearing aid!).  Ask one more person for a recommendation.  Take yourself off of one email list.  And so on.

Often, we get scared when we take on a large task, but breaking it down into units or taking small steps can help make things more manageable.

For example: I enjoy perusing different news websites.  However, this takes up a lot of time where I should be focusing on work.  So, I combined a few “ones.”  I wake up one hour earlier, which means I have more time (to get frivolous stuff out of the way, to make a proper breakfast, etc.).  I cut out one of the news sites, as it was redundant considering the other news sites.  Also, I go to bed one hour earlier, which compensates for the adjusted wake-up time, and actually encourages me to get a proper amount of sleep.

And look at it this way: if you search for jobs five days out of the week, and you add in one extra application per day, that’s 20 extra applications every month!  The ones really add up.

What areas of your life can be improved with the Rule of One?
